I got a few live action shots of Victoria's first tykes basketball lesson on my iphone yesterday. It's a parent/child class made specifically for kids her age (3-6yrs), so that is why you see Dave chasing her in all the pictures. The basketball class meets on Saturdays all this month, then next month we can do t-ball lessons and the next month we can do soccer, so we will probably have a few more updates on her athletic progress as she gets a good introduction to all three sports. She was one of only 3 girls in the class, but she was taller than just about everyone, which Daddy was pretty excited about. During the first drills, where they just asked the kids to race down the court and back, she WASN'T the fastest one (she is always the fastest at preschool) - gasp! She will have to work on her speed!
The whole family went to the gym too - the baby wasn't all that impressed, probably because it was naptime. His squeaks of "I'm ready to sleep NOW" were very echoy in the gym. Jonathan (seen here clutching his mini-basketball) was a totally different story, he couldn't wait to get out there with the kids and play too. He watched his big sister intently the whole time and studied everything they were doing. When the lesson was over and everyone was off the court, Daddy took him over to the lowered hoops and let him shoot a couple of baskets by holding him up in the air. He was THRILLED! It was the greatest thing in the world!!!!
In this picture Victoria is supposed to be dribbling down and back across the court, but as you can see, she was more like kicking the ball and chasing it down the court. She got pretty good at chest passes and catching them, but dribbling is not coming naturally and despite five tries on the low hoop couldn't make a layup. Of course this was only the first lesson, so all we wanted was for her to have fun with it. Coach Sarah took a real interest in Victoria (I'm sure because there weren't that many girls) and helped her work on her form a lot - even gave her a hug when Daddy clocked her in the face with a chest-pass.
She had two moments that had us (and most of the parents in the gym too) in stitches. The first was when she announced after the dribbling exercise that she was "SO GOOD AT BASKETBALL" to the entire gym full of parents and kids! It was doubly hilarious given the fact that she was horrible at dribbling, but she was just so damn excited about the whole thing, it was so cute. The second was when the coaches asked what three skills you need in order to be a "triple threat" in basketball and Victoria yelled out "I KNOW!!!!" Everyone went completely quiet to listen to her answer the question and she FROZE!!! Daddy even fed her the answers, but she was absolutely silent. I was laughing so hard tears were streaming down my face. The coaches were fantastic and really dug how excited she was about the whole thing. She is already asking me this morning when we have another lesson.... poor kid has to wait a whole week!!!
